Spotlight on Plantar Faciitis .... the dreaded running injury!

What is plantar Faciitis? 

 

The plantar fascia is the tissue under the foot which forms the arch. When over-used and over-stretched the tissue often becomes sore, thickened and inflamed. 

 

Symptoms of plantar fasciitis present as a gradual onset of pain under the heel which may radiate forwards into the foot towards the base of the big toe. Symptoms come on gradually and are often worse first thing in the morning.

 

There are a number of factors which can increase the likelihood of developing plantarfaciitis. These include foot biomechanics, such as overpronation, flat feet, tight calf muscles, poor footwear, being overweight and previous injury.

 

 

How to treat plantar Faciitis:

 

The thickened and inflamed plantar fascia tissue needs to be rested and effectively stretched. The plantar fascia stretch is done by pulling the foot and toes upwards aiming to feel a stretch in the arch of the foot. Rolling the foot over a golf ball can also help to stretch and release the plantar fascia. 

 

If pain persists after adopting these self management techniques and rest, therapist treatment consisting of soft tissue release, acupuncture and kinesio taping will effectively relieve any remaining pain.
