Many of you .. particularly the runners and cyclists amongst you, often come to me with knee pain. Over 80% of the time this pain is caused by the IT Band.
The IT Band is a thick band of fibrous tissue that runs down the outside of the thigh, from the hip to the top of the tibia (shin bone). Increased tension within the IT Band is often the cause of knee pain as it compresses bursae (fluid filled sacs) and creates inflammation around the patella when the knee moves through flexion and extension.
Rolling the IT Band with a foam roller seems to be a popular method to help with ITB Syndrome. However .... many of you will have heard me say DONT DO IT!
Rolling and squashing your ITB whilst it is already suffering from inflammation is only going to make it worse! Its also pointless! The IT Band is not a muscle. In fact it is now known to be of a very similar consistency to soft steel..... therefore you cannot change the elasticity of it.
If you are suffering from ITB Syndrome, you need to consider the biomechanics and muscular tension around your hips and legs in order to influence the tension within your ITB and around your knee!
