Shoulder Impingement Syndrome

December 11, 2017

Are you suffering from pain and loss of movement in the shoulder?

Shoulder impingement syndrome is caused by the tendons of the rotator cuff muscles becoming impinged as they pass through a narrow bony space called the subacromial space. With repetitive pinching, the tendons become irritated and inflamed causing pain on shoulder movement.

Pain may be experienced in the shoulder particularly during overhead movements such as swimming , tennis or lifting. The pain usually radiates from the front of the shoulder and can often spread down the arm.

Treatment for shoulder impingement is based around reducing pain and inflammation, and unfortunately requires significant rest and avoiding repetitive movements on the affected side. Soft tissue treatment to the rotator cuff muscles is a great way to release tension and maintain mobility throughout the shoulder, ensuring muscular function is optimum during the recovery phase.

If a shoulder impingement is not treated within its early phases, this can result in further complications. Damaged tendons are more prone to tearing and the adjoining bicep muscle is also prone to rupture.
